Pinterest Controversy [1 Year Later]

Published about 2 months agoΒ β€’Β 3 min read

Hi pinning friend,

I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend! It's technically spring break here this week, which means school is out and things are a bit chaotic...

But, sometimes it's nice for a change of pace, so I can't complain!

In this email, I want to circle back on a topic that made BIG news last year, plus we'll review a new blog post put out by the Pinterest Engineering team... Let's get into it.

Pinterest Controversy

Last spring, NBC News put out an article (trigger warning) about the misuse of photos of children on the Pinterest platform.

Pinterest made some changes to their platform which I detailed here and here.

But the change that affected Pinterest marketers (us) the most, was the "cloaking" of ALL children-related keywords.

That meant all kid-related searches had no secondary keywords in the dropdown search bar nor in the Guided Search keyword bubbles:

On some kid-niche searches, the Trends tool clearly shows a sharp drop shortly after the above article was posted:

This shows how much those secondary keywords can influence search volume!

Secondary keywords for these queries returned to the platform in the Fall of 2023 (as you can see in the Trends chart).

This just so happens to correlate with Pinterest reintroducing auto-generated keywords to increase overall engagement on the platform. This, by default, restored secondary keywords to these searches.

I think it's fair to say the parenting/kid niche is back to normal now. I haven't seen any kid keywords cloaked since, but please let me know if you've seen otherwise.

LinkSage: Is Pinterest Reading Linked Pages?

Recently, the Pinterest Engineering blog featured a new post about LinkSage, a Graph Neural Network (GNN), that reads and [allegedly] learns the content of all pin links on the platform including:

  • blog posts
  • landing pages
  • online shop pages
  • basically every page a pin has ever linked to.

The article explains that understanding off-site content is important because it helps Pinterest determine whether content is safe for the platform and how relevant it is to the query.

⬆️ In this infographic, Link Accessibility caught my eye.

We know that having lots of 404 pages can cause issues with a Pinterest account's reach, even if the domain is claimed...

I always assumed this had to do with the high bounce rate of 404 pages, and the negative engagement signal of a "short click."

But, maybe LinkSage is a part of analyzing the link, too.

I'm not FULLY convinced that Pinterest is truly "understanding" every single webpage of every link, though. At least not yet.

That's because I still see tons of spam pins ranking high in search that lead to pages that have NOTHING to do with the pin image.

Maybe I'm being dramatic or pessimistic...

Or maybe there's a delay...?

I mean, it is a massive amount of data.

I'm not totally sure yet, but this blog post has stirred up some new rabbit holes for me to research, so I'll report back if any new info comes to light.

Welllllll hello, my friend! I hope you had a good weekend. Yesterday, we celebrated an early Thanksgiving with my out-of-town family (many of them I haven't seen in over a year!). It was good to catch up with everyone, and the weather was perfect. Enough about me, let’s jump into some (kinda surprising) Pinterest news, shall we? Pinterest *Actually* Did It Back in May, Pinterest announced that all pin formats would be unified as one format: Pins. Part of that announcement was that static and...
